Uplifted guests and grateful scholarship recipients gathered to celebrate the Association of Black Women Physicians’ 36th Annual Charity and Scholarship Benefit held at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills on November 11, 2017. The atmosphere was eloquent and warm with Thomas Cunningham as Master of Ceremony and a welcome by ABWP President Dr. Ana Lopes Johnson who acknowledged the numerous founding members who were present.
As Chief Executive Officer of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, Dr. Elaine Batchlor’s number one priority has been to improve access and quality of care for underserved communities utilizing innovative and collaborative approaches. Her work to increase access for underserved populations has been recognized in her recognition of this year’s Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Her work is an example of leading best practices that have been adopted throughout California.
Dr. Deborah B. Prothrow-Stith was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for breaking diversity barriers in the medical profession. She is Dean and Professor of Medicine for the College of Medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Prothrow-Stith is an internationally recognized public health leader, who has advised top-tier healthcare, life sciences, academic and not-for-profit institutions on leadership and executive talent in her role as a principal at the global executive search consulting firm, Spencer Stuart.
ABWP gave special tribute to lifetime member and public relations chair, Dr. Carole Jordan-Harris, MD, MS. The tribute was delivered by Dr. Jordan-Harris’ mentee, Ms. Lauren Senkbeil. Dr. Jordan-Harris began her enduring commitment to the Association of Black Women Physicians as a charter member and founding officer (Public Relations Chairperson). She never exhausted her ability to serve and was adored as a loving mother, esteemed colleague, amazing mentor, trusted confidante and loyal friend. Without question, she enriched the lives of all who knew and loved her.
The invocation was reverently delivered by Rev. Alvin Stafford, of Bethel MBC, of Compton, CA. Dr. LaTanya Hines, ABWP scholarship chair, presented ten outstanding medical students with very competitive scholarships. The recipients are Jessica Bodden, Varina Clark, Kamilah Evans, Ozioma Obiwuru, Onome Oboh, Osose Oboh, Monique McDurmott, Mignote Yilma, Tamandra Morgan, and Shannon Sullivan.
Special guests in attendance included Avis Ridley-Thomas and many other distinguished guests who traveled from all parts of the United States.
The Hope Luncheon was an uplifting occasion that left ABWP’s guests inspired.
