First 5 California will host a family-friendly event entitled “Sing-Along and a Splash of Magic!” on Friday, June 23, 2017, from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Inglewood Public Library, 101 W. Manchester Blvd. This free event will feature a sing-along led by award-winning recording artist Sheree Brown, a special magic performance by Michael Ellington, and other exciting surprises for children, parents, and caregivers. A book giveaway is also planned for every child 0 to 5 years of age in attendance.
This special event, which emphasizes the importance of talking, reading, and singing with children beginning at birth to help boost brain development, is an important grassroots component of First 5 California’s statewide public education and outreach campaign, Talk. Read. Sing. It changes everything®.
“Talking, reading, and singing with children right from the start sets them on a path for lifelong success,” said First 5 California Executive Director, Camille Maben. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to engage children in these types of brain-building activities that are both beneficial and fun for the entire family.”
First 5 California, also known as the California Children and Families Commission, was established after voters passed Proposition 10 in 1998, which added a tax on tobacco products to fund education, health, childcare, and other services for children ages 0 to 5 and their families. Its programs and resources are designed to inform teachers, parents, grandparents, and caregivers about the critical role they play during a child’s first five years – with the overarching goal of helping more California kids grow up healthy and ready to succeed in school and in life.
