Multiple events are planned this year as Trinity Baptist Church observes a century of Christian and community service in the city of Los Angeles. A Sunday School group of 15 children and 3 adults founded the ministry on November 11, 1917.
Upcoming activities will highlight the anniversary theme, “Celebrating 100 Years of Walking by Faith, Cherishing our Past, Celebrating our Present, Constructing our Future. For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Cor. 5:7) But without faith, it is impossible to please God. (Heb. 11:1).”
“It is with immense joy that the entire Trinity Baptist Church family commemorate this once in a lifetime event throughout the year of 2017,” said Pastor Alvin Tunstill, Jr. “We invite the greater Los Angeles community to share this memorable occasion with us by participating in any or all of our special programs.”
The kick-off activity, “Walk By Faith,” is set for Saturday, Feb. 25, at 9 a.m., at Trinity’s first location at 3565 S. Normandie Ave. in Los Angeles. The congregation will walk to the church’s current edifice at 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., where an outdoor opening worship celebration will take place and a viewing of the annual Black History display in the Caston Fellowship Center. Also, light refreshments will be served.
On Saturday, March 11, at 11:30 a.m., “The Legends Luncheon” honoring past and present church elders will be held in the Caston Fellowship Center. The donation is $20.
“A Joyous Hallelujah Praise and Worship Service” will be held on Sunday, March 19, at 4 p.m. The guests will be Pastor William S. Epps and the members of Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
Gospel legend Richard Smallwood will appear at Trinity on Saturday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. The concert will include performances by Trinity’s Mass Choir directed by Roland Hamilton and the Contemporary Adults of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Ticket donations are $35 for general admission, $45 for VIP admission and $100 for premiere seating.
On Sunday, May 7, at 4 p.m., Conductor Charles Dickerson and the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) will present a free concert in Trinity’s sanctuary.
The “Gala 100th Anniversary Banquet” takes place on Friday, November 10, at 7 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport Hotel. Ticket reservations are required. The 100th Anniversary Celebration will culminate on Sunday, November 12, with a “Thanks & Praise” worship service.
“Trinity will publish a beautiful souvenir journal for the 100th Anniversary and the community is welcome to be a part of it,” said Pastor Tunstill, who added that details on the journal will be available soon.
Deacon Steve and Norma Roberts are the chairpersons of the 100th Anniversary Committee and the co-chairs are Sedrick and Rosetta Moore.
