The Los Angeles Sparks brought together trailblazing women in the sports world for their HERstory Panel. The panelists included L.A. Kings scout Blake Bolden, retired NBA referee Violet Palmer, Kansas City Royals co-owner Karen Daniel, and SLG Impact CEO and founder Shauna Griffiths.
Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is a WNBA legend who has left her mark on Los Angeles Basketball history as a player and as a coach. Although she was born in Chicago, Cooper-Dyke was raised in Watts and attended Locke High School.
The free agency this offseason brought on a new core of players for the Los Angeles Sparks. Forward Nneka Ogwumike as well as head coach and general manager Derek Fisher are embracing certain changes as well.
The multifaceted star Chiney Qgwumike re-signed with the Sparks, and she will continue her stardom in Los Angeles. The two-time All-Star is wearing many hats, producing ESPN films, broadcasting, and the WNBA Vice-President.
Nia Coffey signed a training camp contract with the Los Angeles Sparks, and she’s excited to play with the iconic organization. Coffey’s Brother, Amir Coffey, plays for the Los Angeles Clippers. Everything’s coming full circle for them.
Renee Montgomery recently became the first former WNBA player to become an executive and owner of a WNBA franchise. Montgomery now owns the Atlanta Dream along with Northland real estate firm chairman Larry Gottesdiener and Northland president and COO Suzanne Abair.
Four-time WNBA Champion Seimone Augustus re-signed with the Sparks. Augustus has one of the most prolific basketball careers in professional basketball history. She ranks tenth in scoring in WNBA history with 2005 points, and she averaged 15.4 points throughout her career. Augustus won championships in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017.
The Sparks signed Bria Holmes this offseason, and she’s excited about her future in Los Angeles. The 2016 draft pick will bring her playoff and championship experience to the Sparks as they expect to compete at a high level this year.
In the wake of WNBA icon Candace Parker departing from the Los Angeles Sparks, the franchise signed former New York Liberty center Amanda Zahui B. A versatile post player who can shoot three-pointers, she averaged 9.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting at 34.0 percent in three-point shots last season.
Brittney Sykes moved in silence and re-signed with the Sparks. The defensive juggernaut made 2nd team all-defense in the first season in Los Angeles, last year in 2020. Sykes will again strive to become Defensive Player of the Year, and she looks forward to furthering her career with the Sparks.
“Women, we are in control,” says Erica Wheeler, who recently signed with the Sparks. WNBA free agency has been a trending topic this offseason, and the Women are taking control of their destiny. Many huge signings, including Wheeler leaving the Indiana Fever to play with the Sparks.
There could not be a better time for athletes to utilize their platforms to make a difference in the communities. Cooper strives to use her voice, and she is inspired by her leader and teammate Ogwumike, who is also the WNBPA President.
She said, “The world is so crazy. I was able to be on a team with , president of the WNBPA. She is awesome. Being in the bubble, many people supported her and her ability to speak up and be the forefront of us standing together as a league. To watch that and see what they have done, it was very motivating and encouraging to do the same. I have hopes for change in the future.”
