Advocates to State Senate: Diabetes Patients Can’t Afford to Wait on ‘Life-Saving’ Bill

Californians living with diabetes, a group of doctors and some African American healthcare advocates are asking the state Senate to take up — and quickly vote on — an “urgent” public health bill that lawmakers have put on ice. If passed, the legislation would place a $50 cap on monthly copayments insurers require diabetic patients to cover when buying their insulin treatments.  

Police Repression Impacts Communities of Color and Workers

The police attack in Century City took place the year before a more famous LAPD abuse case involving motorist Rodney King. Millions saw the televised video of the police beating Rodney King as he lay on the ground. When the police were acquitted by a mostly white jury, the verdict triggered the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest.

WNBA Hosts Virtual Draft

The WNBA practiced social distancing by hosting the first virtual Draft on Friday, April 17 on ESPN. One of the few athletic events that was not impacted by the COVID-19, the Draft was mainly broadcasted from the houses of league commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the Draftees.

Urinary Bladder Cancer in African Americans

Dr. Wu’s study is called the University of California Minority Patient-Derived Xenograft Trial and Development Center (UCaMP). The UCaMP study will examine treatment options by looking at cells from patients with bladder cancer including African-Americans.
