U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on Saturday released the following statement following President Trump’s nomination of U.S. Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States:

Harris to Graham: Hold Immediate Hearing on Roger Stone Case and Make AG Barr Testify

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on Tuesday sent a letter to Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) demanding that the committee hold a hearing—with Attorney General Bill Barr as a witness—on potential political interference in the sentencing of Roger Stone, President Trump’s former campaign advisor and longtime friend. Harris’ letter comes after reports that the Department of Justice was considering reducing the sentencing recommendation put forward by the career prosecutors overseeing Stone’s case, all four of whom have since requested to withdraw from the case, and after the Department filed an updated sentencing recommendation in the case that contradicted the career prosecutors.

After ‘Butt Dial,’ Harris Urges Expanded Investigation into State Department Involvement in Giuliani’s Activities

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Thursday sent a letter to State Department Inspector General Steve Linick demanding an expanded investigation into any violations of law or policy by State Department officials related to Rudy Giuliani’s work in to Bahrain, Turkey, or any other country. Harris previously called on Linick to investigate whether any Department of State officials enabled Rudy Giuliani’s efforts in Ukraine to advance President Trump’s political interests. The State Department IG has not yet confirmed or denied whether there is an ongoing investigation into Giuliani’s activities. 

Harris, Colleagues to Lighthizer: No Trade Negotiations with Brazil Until Bolsonaro Protects the Amazon

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Friday joined Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) and 8 of their Democratic colleagues in urging U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to postpone any trade negotiations with Brazil until President Jair Bolsonaro fully enforces his country’s environmental laws and regulations to protect the Amazon from continued illegal deforestation. In the letter, the senators also called on Lighthizer to swiftly resolve the U.S.-China trade war which has disrupted global trade patterns and driven China to rely increasingly on Brazil for beef and soybeans. As a result, and in contravention of its environmental regulations, Brazil is clearing more of the Amazon for agriculture.

Harris, Ocasio-Cortez Introduce Bill to Provide People with Criminal Records A Fair Chance at Housing

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) and U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) on Wednesday introduced the Fair Chance at Housing Act of 2019, legislation to remove barriers to obtaining federal housing assistance for individuals with criminal records and their families. The proposal is a comprehensive reform of the eviction and screening policies so individuals with a criminal history have a fair chance at housing assistance.

Harris, Colleagues Introduce Legislation to Accelerate Electrification of Nation’s School Bus Fleet

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Wednesday led Senators Merkley (D-OR), Feinstein (D-CA) Booker (D-NJ), Smith (D-MN), Sanders (I-VT), and Cortez Masto (D-NV) in introducing the Clean School Bus Act, legislation to assist school districts around the country in replacing traditional diesel school buses with new, electric buses in order to mitigate students’ and drivers’ exposure to harmful pollutants and help address the climate crisis.
