On May 9, 2020, Andre Harrell, the influential music mogul, passed away at the age of 59 due to heart failure. With a repertoire of curating Black excellence through ownership and creativity that spanned over three decades – of rap, soul, television, fashion, and film – the mourning hymn that echoes amongst the culture crescendos more each day.
For 14 years, Los Angeles has enjoyed the annual Taste of Soul Family Food Festival on Crenshaw Blvd. The day-long festival presented by Bakewell Media boasts over 350,000 visitors just last year alone. Taste of Soul has become an institution in the Crenshaw community and draws people from L.A. and beyond, coming to enjoy live music and entertainment on more than five stages, delicious food from hundreds of vendors and shopping – including blocks and blocks of art, jewelry, clothing, beauty products as well as a plethora of free community services. The festival is family-friendly and known for being one of the largest and safest events in Southern California. Originally founded by Bakewell Media CEO Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. in 2005, Taste of Soul has grown exponentially over the years, and Mr. Bakewell says he can’t believe it’s been 14 years since its beginning.
It’s been four years since Hyundai first became a sponsor for Bakewell Media’s Taste of Soul Festival and this year, they’re returning with the Hyundai “We Are One” Experience at Taste of Soul 2019.
The star located at Cahuenga and Hollywood Boulevard celebrate the legacy of the famed producer.
Saturday, October 20, marked 13 years of the largest street festival in Southern California and the Taste of Soul (TOS) nation still hasn’t come down from the festival high!
The lineup included hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow, R&B diva Chanté Moore, R&B legend Ginuwine, King of New Jack Swing Teddy Riley featuring Blackstreet and Soul songstress Melanie Fiona.
It’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the release of Ginuwine’s “So Anxious.” The sensual slow jam embodies an era of R&B you can’t discuss without mentioning the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter who says he’s bringing nothing but hits to the Hyundai Soundstage at the 13th annual Taste of Soul Family Festival.
In 2009, Melanie Fiona released her debut single “Give It to Me Right” which became the staple R&B song for all women who were in relationships or leaving from a romantic relationship. Nine years later, Fiona is still producing some of the greatest R&B hits. However this time, she is sharing her music with 350,000 people on the Hyundai Soundstage during the 13th annual Taste of Soul Family Festival.
