The Rosemead-based parent company of Southern California Edison will award $40,000 scholarships, paid over four years, to 30 scholars enrolled in a four-year accredited U.S. college or university after high school graduation.
“Thanks to Toyota and the Keck Foundation, we are now much more equipped to take engineering and mathematical concepts that are theoretical and physically put them in the hands of students to bring STEM to life,” said California State University Dominguez Hills President Willie J. Hagan, ahead of the debut of Four new mobile fabrication laboratories (fab labs) at the Carson campus on September 27.
The Los Angeles County Community Development Foundation (LACDF) gave $35,000 in scholarships to 33 students in public housing and Section 8 participants on July 20.
“The consistent thing we hear from the Facebooks and Googles of the world is that they are not able to identify young talented people of color,” explained Eli KennedyCEO of the Level Playing Field Institute, the organization that heads up the Summer Math and Science Honors program at UCLA.
Verizon Foundation’s education arm Verizon Innovative Learning recently expanded their STEM & entrepreneurship program for minority middle school boys, according to officials of the organization.

The Los Angeles Board of Public Works and HNTB Corporation recently completed two sessions of hands-on aviation experience with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s first all-girls middle school – the Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA). The collaborative SPARK LA partnership between the City of Los Angeles and HNTB supplements the new school’s focus on a STEM curriculum – science, technology, engineering and math – to attract more female students to pursue degrees and professions where females traditionally are underrepresented.
