An ex-convict pleaded guilty on March 3 to murder and other counts in the shooting death of Community Activist and Philanthropist Jacqueline “Jacquie” Avant, the wife of celebrated music executive, Clarence Avant, during a burglary at the couple’s Trousdale Estates home in Beverly Hills.
The National Urban League and the Los Angeles Urban League will honor civil rights activist and media entrepreneur Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., sports legend, entrepreneur and businessman Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Los Angeles mayoral candidate and U.S. Congresswoman Karen Bass at their Community of Champions Luncheon on Friday, February 11.
“I am relieved to hear that an arrest has been made so quickly and I thank the Beverly Hills and Los Angeles Police for working so quickly. I hope that all the perpetrators and anyone else who participated in this heinous crime is arrested and brought to justice.
This, unfortunately, does not and will not relieve the pain that Clarence, Nicole, Alex and all who knew Jackie are feeling today.

The Right Reverend J. Drew Sheard has been elected presiding bishop and chief apostle of the Church of God in Christ, Inc., the nation’s largest Pentecostal denomination of more than six million members.
The announcement was made on March 20, following the Quadrennial Election, which was held virtually.
Sheard replaces the Right Reverend Charles E. Blake, Sr., pastor of West Angeles COGIC in Los Angeles, who served 13 years as the chief apostle and presiding bishop.

“The Black community is already subject to a lot, and we’re not thought about all the time. It’s important for us to take matters into our own hands and really be prepared for what’s to come because sometimes we’re not considered in the game plan as far as what the world needs to do,” Sidqe said.
In the heart of the Crenshaw District, in South L.A., a community food distribution drive through was held at the Los Angeles Sentinel on Saturday, July 18, 2020 from 9M – Noon, to provide groceries for community members experiencing economic hardship due with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bakewell Media, Los Angeles Sentinel, Mothers In Action, AFGE, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Labor Community Services, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Miguel Contreras Foundation, Teamsters National Black Caucus, Councilmember Herb Wesson of CD 10 and County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas of the 2nd District collaborated to successfully distribute groceries to 2,500 families in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

Louis Sanford Patton, Sr., who preferred to be called Louie, grew up in South Los Angeles and was the oldest son to his beloved mother Lee Versie, and father James. He was preceded in death by his only sibling, George.
