The Crenshaw Cougars defeated the Arleta Mustangs 26-17, advancing the Cougars to the division I city championship game against Narbonne High school. This was the lowest scoring playoff game for the Cougars this postseason. Crenshaw scored 54 points in their first and second round games, according to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF). Arleta had gone undefeated this season, upsetting the 2nd seeded Birmingham in the quarterfinals. View Park Rugby player Nia Toliver has received the title High School Athlete of the Month by Sports Illustrated. Representatives from the US Marines and members of the men’s and women’s Rugby national team attended a special ceremony for Toliver at the campus of View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter High School on Friday, November 13. Toliver’s mastery of Rugby has given her numerous accolades and camp invitations. The Dorsey girls’ volleyball team earned the in-season championship for the Coliseum League. The Dons also rank in the top 10 of the Los Angeles City Section Divison IV standings. “They’re a team and they battle for each other,” said head coach Quinton Bradley. “Their confidence is high.” Despite struggling during the Venice invitational and losing their preseason game to Hamilton High School, Dorsey excelled in the Coliseum League. The Augustus Hawkins Varsity women’s volleyball team found itself fighting for redemption during the second round of the Coliseum League games. “Our record doesn’t necessarily show the abilities of the team,” said head coach Cheylinel Gaston. Gaston has been coaching the team since the inception of the program. The team consists of 12 players, six of whom are seniors. Six members played under the tutelage of Gaston during the previous season. USC announced on Monday, October 12, that it has fired head coach Steve Sarkisian. This move comes one day after athletic director Pat Haden placed Sarkisian on an indefinite leave of absence. The nationwide leader in sports-based youth development, Up2Us Sports, brought 80 youth coaches together as the CEO and founder led a panel discussion on ways to prevent violence in youth through using sports to end out a four-day training on Tuesday Sept. 22. Ask any college football fan about USC wide receivers coach Tamaurice Martin, better known as “Tee” Martin and they will tell you – he was the quarterback who led the Tennessee Volunteers in 1998 to its first college football national championship in 47 years. After Tennessee, the Pittsburg Steelers selected Martin in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Martin would go on to play for NFL Europe, the Oakland Raiders, and in the Canadian Football League. After a four-year hiatus, youth baseball is back in the form of T-ball, largely due to an initiative from Councilmen Herb Wesson, the LA Dodger Foundation, and the LAPD’s Southwest Division.
