Councilmember Harris-Dawson and Mayor Garcetti Break Ground on New Bridge Housing in Council District Eight

Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Mayor Garcetti broke ground today on a new emergency bridge housing facility that will provide beds for 100 homeless Angelenos at a time, and offer on-site supportive services to help them transition into permanent housing. The project will be the first of Mayor Garcetti’s “A Bridge Home” sites to open in South L.A.

How the Mainstream Media Wasted No Time in Turning Nipsey Hussle’s South L.A. Mourners Into Savages

A lot of things have changed in Los Angeles over the past two decades but one thing that’s been constant is the presence of street gangs and the violence they inflict. Shootings take place pretty much every day in Los Angeles. They’ve never stopped. People get shot–some live, some don’t. What stopped was the local news reporting on them.
So I was not surprised that there had been a shooting Thursday evening in South L.A.–not Watts–near the intersection of 103rd and Main streets that left four Black people shot and one dead. I was more surprised to actually hear about on the news.

Nipsey Hussle and Ty Dolla $ign Headline Free #TimeDone Campaign Bringing Awareness to the Past Convictions Crisis

The smooth rhythms of L.A. natives rapper Nipsey Hussle, award-winning artist Ty Dolla $ign, and R&B Bay-area artist Goapele filled the speakers at the Greek Theatre on Sunday evening, Oct. 22 for the #TimeDone campaign’s free concert. The concert served as a launching pad to raise awareness of legal prohibitions on job and housing eligibility, other barriers that 70 million Americans living with a past conviction face after completing prison sentences. 

Rising NFL Star Jaydon Mickens Comes ‘Out The Mud’ to Give Back

Rising NFL star Jadon Mickens of the Jacksonville Jaguars returned to his inner-city L.A. roots, along with S.E.A and Young Money APAA Sports, to present “Out the Mud”, a free youth football camp /mentorship effort for kids (ages 8-14)at Rancho Cienega Park’s Jackie Robinson Stadium (AKA Dorsey High), in South L.A. on Saturday, July 7. 

Local Bike Club Aims to Improve Vulnerable Communities Through Riding, Maintaining Bikes

Members of the East Side Riders Bike Club said their one part of their mission is to provide opportunities to vulnerable kids in South Los Angeles by steering them in a new direction. The ten year old volunteer organization has been doing work in South L.A. and Watts that focuses on keeping kids off drugs and from gangs through recreational activities, specifically bike riding said president John Jones III via his website esrbc.org. But just as important as keeping youth away from destructive activities, is the other part of their mission, to steer kids toward activities that help them enrich the communities in which they live.
