Four Black Leaders Join Diverse Group of Appointees on Gov. Newsom’s New Racial Equity Commission On July 27, Gov. Newsom announced the appointment of an Executive Director and seven appointees to serve on the state’s first Racial Equity Commission, which is supported by an initial state investment of $3.8 million over the next fiscal year and $3.1 million each year following, through 2030. Created by a 2022 executive order the commission will recommend actions the state can take to “advance racial equity and address structural racism,” according to the governor’s office. This week, Mia Bonta was sworn in as the 11th member of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC). Mia Bonta gave her oath of office in a formal ceremony at the state Capitol and will now serve as a member of the California State Assembly representing the 18th Assembly District (Oakland, Alameda and San Leandro). Bonta won her campaign last week in a special election for the seat recently vacated by her husband, Rob Bonta.  Mr. Bonta was appointed Attorney General this past spring.

Two Californian men have been charged with a hate crime in Oregon for allegedly assaulting a Black gas station attendant.
A Berkeley woman was charged with a hate crime after she allegedly harassed a Black Amazon delivery driver, shouting racial slurs at him and physically stopping his attempts to escape the confrontation.
