Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove has been a brilliant, courageous, and revolutionary legislator throughout her tenure. Her reputation as a community advocate and fighter for the people along with her long list of accomplishments persuaded the editorial board of the Los Angeles Sentinel to name her as Co-Legislators of the Year.
Since being elected in 2022, the Congresswoman has worked tirelessly on behalf on her constituents. As the representative for California’s 37th district, Kamlager-Dove’s region is comprised of some of the most diverse neighborhoods of greater Los Angeles.
The district includes Culver City, Ladera Heights, View Park, Park Mesa Heights, Baldwin Hills, Crenshaw, South Central, Hyde Park, Jefferson Park, Leimert Park, Palms, South Robertson, West Adams, Mid-City, Pico, West L.A, and more communities of Los Angeles.
Kamlager-Dove’s record reveals the many initiatives she has made to benefit residents and businesses in these areas. Some of the most significant actions by Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove and her team of dedicated staffers include:
- Restored nearly $3.4 million to constituents from federal agencies
- Secured installation of a mail drop box at the Tom Bradley Post Office in Crenshaw
- Obtained $12.4 million in federal funding to support 15 local projects
- Introduced 34 legislative bills with two being passed into law
- Passed the Grateful Act, which aids foreign nationals who worked 15 years overseas for the U.S. Government to immigrate to this country.
- ensures that the U.S. participates in the Summit of the Americas to maintain interaction with Latin American and Caribbean partners.
- Convened 48 forums and roundtables to address community concerns
The Congresswoman boldly expresses her commitment to key issues such as the economy, education, energy, health, and veterans’ affairs. Her congressional appointments to various committees and caucuses enable her to continue to focus on these matters.
Kamlager-Dove is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and serves as subcommittees on the Western Hemisphere and on South and Central Asia. Also, she serves on the House Committee on the Judiciary and is a member of its Constitution and Limited Government Subcommittee and the Courts, Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet Subcommittee.
As for the caucuses, Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove is with the Congressional Black Caucus where she serves as the Whip. She also co-chairs the Congressional Caucus on Youth, co-chairs the Congressional Brazil Caucus, policy co-chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, and is vice chair of the Equal Rights Amendment Caucus.
Kamlager-Dove has a long history of working in the nonprofit and government sector to improve the quality of life for the greater Los Angeles community. Early in her career, she was the spokesperson for the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) and was promoted to SPARC’s public art director.
After taking a position as an assistant to actor Delroy Lindo, Kamlager-Dove next worked as public affairs director for Crystal Stairs, which was headed at the time by County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. She went on to serve as Mitchell’s district director when Mitchell was elected to the California State Assembly.
In 2015, Kamlager-Dove was elected to the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. From 2018 to 2021, she was a California State Assemblymember where she focused on racial equity and social justice issues.
Kamlager-Dove was co-author of the CROWN Act, which prohibits discrimination against people wearing natural or protective hairstyles. Other notable legislation that she sponsored included building a new arena for the L.A. Clippers pro basketball team, mandating implicit bias training into the continued education curriculum for healthcare professionals, lawyers, and judges, and ending the trophy hunting of bobcats, except under special conditions, making it the state’s first hunting ban in decades.
Her appointments in the Assembly included service on the Public Safety, Arts and Entertainment, Communications and Conveyance, Insurance and the Rules committee. In addition, she served as chair of the Select Committee on Incarcerated Women and headed the Assembly’s Los Angeles County Delegation.
In 2021, Kamlager-Dove was elected to the California State Senate and one year later, she won nearly 64% of the vote to represent the 37th Congressional District.
