John Adams and his son, John Quincy, were the only two of our first 12 Presidents who didn’t own slaves.  

I mention this for two reasons: first, to demonstrate how the control and devaluation of Black lives formed the foundation of our political thought; and second, to reinforce that Adams may be more qualified than most founding fathers to speak about justice. 

He wrote, “we are to look upon it as more beneficial, that many guilty persons should escape unpunished, than one innocent person should suffer.”

The $2.3 trillion coronavirus stimulus package includes a temporary tax change for individuals who make at least $1 million a year, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. The Joint Committee’s analysis shows 43,000 taxpayers in the highest income bracket, making more than $1 million a year, could save a combined $70 billion in taxes. Almost all benefits from the tax break go to people making more than $100,000 a year.

U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Thursday sent a letter to State Department Inspector General Steve Linick demanding an expanded investigation into any violations of law or policy by State Department officials related to Rudy Giuliani’s work in to Bahrain, Turkey, or any other country. Harris previously called on Linick to investigate whether any Department of State officials enabled Rudy Giuliani’s efforts in Ukraine to advance President Trump’s political interests. The State Department IG has not yet confirmed or denied whether there is an ongoing investigation into Giuliani’s activities.
