The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is a one dose vaccination, so all 10,000 participants are now fully vaccinated. Tracy Mitchell, president of Mothers in Action, said “I want to thank the Mothers In Action’s village of volunteers that have staffed the site from day one, and who have committed to continue supporting this effort until April 10, when the site closes.”

In memory of Mitchell’s late Mother, the founder of M.I.A., Brenda Marsh-Mitchell, they distribute their first 100 backpacks each year for the last 6 years to First AME Church for their foster care youth in honor of her passing and life of service.. “My Mother was the founder of Mother’s In Action, and she understood that children fail because they can’t hear, they can’t see, and don’t have the resources to have a successful school year. So she started this thing 22 years ago, said President Mitchell.”

In the heart of the Crenshaw District, in South L.A., a community food distribution drive through was held at the Los Angeles Sentinel on Saturday, July 18, 2020 from 9M – Noon, to provide groceries for community members experiencing economic hardship due with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bakewell Media, Los Angeles Sentinel, Mothers In Action, AFGE, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Labor Community Services, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Miguel Contreras Foundation, Teamsters National Black Caucus, Councilmember Herb Wesson of CD 10 and County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas of the 2nd District collaborated to successfully distribute groceries to 2,500 families in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.

On April 29, 1992, Ward Economic Development Corp (WEDC) had just completed its first housing development – Ward Villas (WV). In the first month, neighbors – even those who were skeptical about who would move into affordable housing – came to help us protect the newly completed 90,000 + square ft. state of the art complex from being burned or looted. People of good will provided staples, helped to “man” the fire hoses, stood guard, help residents feel comfortable, setting in place a close community relatedness that has lasted over these last 29 years.

BHERC ‘Operation Love’ Aids Union Rescue Mission During COVID-19

The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) continued its “Operation Love” outreach April 19, with a drive to collect toilet paper for the Union Rescue Mission (URM). Located on skid row in downtown L.A., URM works directly with homeless individuals through its life-transforming ministry focused on the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. BHERC is a nonprofit, public benefit organization designed to advocate, educate, research, develop, and preserve the history and future of Black images in film and television.
