The mayor announced schools in L.A. County can offer on campus services for “small stable cohorts” for k-12 students who need the educational support. Starting September 14, the “cohort approach” is to monitor and observe the adjustment to see what works on a smaller scale before reopening schools. This method is being handled with caution because of the severity of what can go wrong if there was an outbreak among students and faculty.
Mayor Eric Garcetti said today that he signed an executive directive to make city services more accessible online and contact-free whenever possible amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Garcetti said people can already pay bills online, and contact-free pickup services of materials from libraries is available, but “this directive is a critical step to not only modernize government but to keep us safe as we open up city services, or the city services that have stayed open and that you depend on don’t put you at risk.”
L.A. Controller Ron Galperin, in cooperation with the City’s Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD), updated his interactive map and microloan tracker displaying the microloans funded by the City of Los Angeles to help small businesses get the assistance they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the program started, EWDD has distributed more than $5.9 million to 419 Los Angeles businesses — an increase from the $3.4 million to 227 businesses reported when Galperin first released the tracker in July. Available at lacontroller.org/microloans, Galperin’s microloan tracker is updated through the beginning of August and includes a map with the name, location and loan amount for each recipient.
City Planning, the largest planning department in the United States, has named its first Chief Equity Officer Faisal Roble to lead in a newly-created position to spearhead racial justice efforts within the Department. This role will also help address implicit bias in City Planning policies and outreach. With more than 30 years of experience and most recently holding the title of Principal City Planner, Roble will help craft City Planning’s Racial Equity Action Plan that will better guide diverse outreach and engagement that informs 35 distinct communities during the City Planning process.
Appointed by the Director of Planning Vince Bertoni in response to Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Executive Order No. 27on Racial Equity in City Government, Roble has a robust history of serving various community groups around Los Angeles. His experience includes managing visions for South, Southeast and West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert communities. Part of his work helped address racial injustice, equity, as well as economic disinvestment. His leadership in over 20 projects has helped bolster affordable housing and sustainable communities. Most recently, he oversaw projects of significant importance to the South L.A. community, including the redevelopment of Jordan Downs from 700 units of public housing into a 1,073 unit, mixed-use, mix-income neighborhood with a full-service grocery store, commercial and community services and more than five acres of parks and open space.
As of July 27, the metrics of COVID-19 are showing a steady plateau; according to the Mayor of Los Angeles, the curve is heading in the right direction. On Monday, the county reported 2,039 new cases. This brings the total diagnosed reports to 176,028. There were 905 of those cases found in the city of L.A.; there were an additional count of 17 deaths. In summary, there are 4,375 fallen Angelenos.
