A New Leader for the LACCD Board of Trustees? There’s Only One Choice

When the Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees elects its new President next week, they have a chance to make a statement–they can elect a leader who both looks like and understands the students the district serves.

Why is it important? The new President will become the face of the district, and with nearly four out of five students coming from minority backgrounds, that face should reflect the composition of the colleges. That’s why we are urging the LACCD Board of Trustees to elevate Sydney Kamlager-Dove to its presidency.

At a press conference at L.A. Trade-Technical College, the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) today released a far-reaching report that shows more than 60% of student respondents experience food insecurity while more than 18% of students are homeless in the past year.

Mary Lee Zachary Passes at 94

After a long and fulfilling life, Carson resident Mary Lee Patterson Zachary passed away on May 17. She was 94 years old. Mary Lee was well known throughout educational circles due to her successful career as a cafeteria manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles Community College District. Her tenure at both agencies totaled 36 years. A native of Lancaster, South Carolina, Mary Lee was born on August 31, 1922, to Willie and Irene Barnes Patterson. Her family soon moved to Fort Mill, SC, where she accepted Christ as her Savior at a young age
