Jazz Series Honors Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson

Parkside EDC will present an evening of the music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson on June 27 as part of its Jazz Cool Down series in Leimert Park. The series, held at LA Third Church, benefits college scholarships for students from Dorsey and Crenshaw High Schools and features LA jazz luminaries such as Barbara Morrison, Ernie Watts and Roy Gaines.

The only two Black members of the Arizona Legislature were formally chastised for speaking out against a Republican lawmaker’s published column, which included a racial slur and they say derided Black activists while attempting to discredit leaders of a teacher group protesting for better pay. Mayor Aja Brown, the City of Compton and over 10,000 parade spectators welcomed home 2016 multiple Grammy nominee rapper Kendrick Lamar as the grand marshal of the 63rd Annual Compton Christmas Parade held Saturday, December 12. Kendrick Lamar Announced as 2015 Grand Marshal of Compton Christmas Parade

 63rd annual Christmas Parade to take place Sat. Dec. 12 Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who is the leading nominee for the 2016 GRAMMY awards with 11 nominations, including album of the year for “To Pimp a Butterfly” and song of the year for “Alright”, was announced recently as the 2015 Compton Christmas Parade Grand Marshal.
