Homelessness Takes Center Stage in ‘Under the Freeway’

Six years ago, playwright Brandi Burks opened a new theatrical production, “Under the Freeway,” to highlight homeless people facing the consequences of their life choices. Fast-forward to 2019 and homelessness has reached rampant proportions with the number of individuals in this status escalating at an alarming rate. No longer is it only substance abuse and mental disorders that lead to homelessness, but also economic reasons, housing shortages and a myriad of contributing factors. In light of the today’s situation, Burks is reviving “Under the Freeway” to present the musical stage play on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 8 p.m., at the

Words of the Week – Changing Times & Cold Hearts

One of my favorite musical groups is Earth, Wind & Fire and I grew up hearing their music all the time on the hi-fi. One particular album is a favorite of mine called “Raise!” and there is a song called “The Changing Times.” The first lyrics ring very true of today: “As you discover changing times, You must have the strength to endure.” We have been in the midst of changing times, but it is getting more evident, as times goes by, these days are getting darker. Wendy’s Window-Traveling Opens Our Mind and Our Perspective on Life

Traveling across the country as well as abroad allows one to take in a variety of opinions and perspectives. Understanding different attitudes and points of view can help navigate the awkwardness of sensitive topics that I was curious to discuss. As I traveled through various parts of Italy and Greece recently, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts about forgiveness, humanity, hope, peace, love and happiness to a variety of people and what I found is that all of us have the same basic concerns.  One of those concerns pertains to the direction the world and mankind is headed in today’s political and global climate, but overall people still believe in humanity and that goodness will prevail.
