Latino Caucus Chair: Real Justice Calls For Supporting African American Policy Issues

Shortly after members of the California legislature took a knee for eight minutes and 46 seconds at the California Capitol to protest racism and the death of George Floyd, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) took the opportunity to call out some of her Latino colleagues. 

“I have to be honest, I’m disappointed with our Latino caucus,” Gonzalez said at the event that Assemblymember Syndey Kamlager (D-Los Angeles), a member the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), organized. 

Gov. Taps Diverse Group for COVID-19 Recovery Task Force

The governor said he is charging the diverse group of social, political and economic leaders to analyze every sector of the state economy and put together a road map to economic recovery. Newsom says he expects the task force to come up with “short-term, medium-term and long-term ideas” to put California on track to once again attain the level of economic prosperity the state had reached before the pandemic: 21 consecutive months of job growth; a $20 billion budget surplus in 2019; and 20 billion more stacked away in the state reserves.

Brown is now a commissioner on the California Commission on Aging. She also serves on Gov. Newsom’s Master Plan for the Aging Stakeholder Advisory Committee. Brown says each person in her group, which includes several local ministers, calls at least five elderly people every day to check on them.

About a month ago, business and political representatives from more than 20 cities across the Inland Empire  – a metropolitan area east of Los Angeles that covers parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties – held a press conference in the city of Riverside. At the meeting, they sounded off against new California Energy Commission and California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) rules designed to move energy users away from natural gas, toward electric power.
