The Lula Washington Dance Theatre, (LWDT) is proud to announce a $150,000.00 grant from Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas to create an outdoor class and performance space during these times of COVID-19 and enable us to provide classes and performances year-round.
In the heart of the Crenshaw District, in South L.A., a community food distribution drive through was held at the Los Angeles Sentinel on Saturday, July 18, 2020 from 9M – Noon, to provide groceries for community members experiencing economic hardship due with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bakewell Media, Los Angeles Sentinel, Mothers In Action, AFGE, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Labor Community Services, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Miguel Contreras Foundation, Teamsters National Black Caucus, Councilmember Herb Wesson of CD 10 and County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas of the 2nd District collaborated to successfully distribute groceries to 2,500 families in Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
Pointing to “sobering” statistics showing that the number of homeless people dying in Los Angeles County nearly doubled from 2013-18, the Board of Supervisors voted today to deploy health care workers to encampments and shelters to assess health needs among the homeless.
SoLa Impact and its non-profit affiliate, the SoLa I CAN! Foundation, along with its philanthropic partner, Romeo Miller, awarded nearly $100,000 in financial aid grants to twenty-seven deserving students at its annual scholarship awards ceremony yesterday held at the University of Southern California. The Board of Supervisors today approved a pilot jobs training program at the county’s women’s jail, aiming to lower recidivism rates.
Supervisor Sheila Kuehl recommended the program, which is expected to serve 200 women at Century Regional Detention Facility over two years.
