Arlene Margaret Hayden-Mayo, affectionately known as Mema or Twin, passed May 29, becoming absent from her body to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8). The viewing will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 3pm to 5pm at Spalding Mortuary, 3045 South La Brea in Los Angeles. A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, June 15, at 10 a.m., at Second A.M.E. Church, 5500 S. Hoover St., in Los Angeles. Los Angeles lost a giant in the faith with the passing of the Rev. Dr. Solomon L. Drake, pastor emeritus of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Drake, who died on August 18 at the age of 90, was a spiritual father and mentor to scores of leading ministers. The life of District Missionary Lillie Benbow Jackson will be celebrated on Friday, August 27, and Saturday, August 26, at 88th St. Temple Church of God in Christ, 8825 S. Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles. Superintendent Anthony L. Williams, who is the son of Jackson Benbow, is also the host pastor. Alna “Pearl” Brown’s life illuminated the finest qualities of a beautiful “lady in service.” During her campaign for chapter president of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Ladera Chapter, Pearl often quoted, “Well done is better than well said.” For 34 years, Pearl was immersed in being a “Top Lady,” serving in a myriad of positions including area VI director for the Western States; Top Teens advisor; second vice president and liaison to the American Heart/Stroke Association. Tributes poured in as the Southern California faith community learned of the passing of legendary musician director Barbara A. Allen, who succumbed to illness on Nov. 6. Described by her husband, the Rev. Jordan Allen, as the “undisputed Queen of gospel music,” Barbara was currently the minister of music at New Philadelphia AME Church. However, thousands of people were positively affected by her decades-long service in the same capacity at Faithful Central Bible Church.
