Tributes poured in as the Southern California faith community learned of the passing of legendary musician director Barbara A. Allen, who succumbed to illness on Nov. 6.
Described by her husband, the Rev. Jordan Allen, as the “undisputed Queen of gospel music,” Barbara was currently the minister of music at New Philadelphia AME Church. However, thousands of people were positively affected by her decades-long service in the same capacity at Faithful Central Bible Church.
A celebration of her life is set for Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m., at Faithful Central, 321 N. Eucalyptus St., in Inglewood. Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer, senior pastor, developed a long friendship with Barbara over the years.
Responding to her passing, Ulmer said, “Barbara Allen set the bar high for music ministry. Her gifts crossed all boundaries of creativity, versatility, innovation and excellence all grounded by a passion for the Master, which fueled her passion for music. One of the highlights of my 36 years at Faithful Central was the honor of being allowed to serve with her for over 30 years in a rare mutual commitment to kingdom service that connected pulpit and podium.”
New Philadelphia Pastor Darryl E. Walker declared, “Barbara was the greatest of the great! She knew the business of music and she had the skills and graces to bring the best out of those under her direction.”
Condolence expressions for the family of Barbara Allen, such as flowers or cards, will be accepted at FCBC Tabernacle on the day of her homegoing service.
