Black Panther Makes Golden Globe History

For the first time in history a superhero movie has received a “Best Motion Picture” nomination in the drama category at the Golden Globes, thanks to Black Panther. The film, which is the highest-grossing solo superhero film to date earning $1.3 billion worldwide, was also nominated for best original song for Kendrick Lamar’s “All The Stars” featuring SZA and best original score for Ludwig Göransson’s work on the film.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Stan Lee, the creative dynamo who revolutionized the comic book and helped make billions for Hollywood by introducing human frailties in superheroes such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Incredible Hulk, died Monday. He was 95. Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee. As the top writer at Marvel Comics and later as its publisher, Lee was widely considered the architect of the contemporary comic book. Movies in the Park, Health Fun Fest, Power Fest

Carmel Rec Center where we’ll be watching Black Panther*, Wakanda Forever! Next week, join me and Empowerment Congress West at the Health and Wellness Fun Fest at Norman O. Houston Park, including a 5k run, yoga, zumba, and a full day worth of health-focused fun. The weekend right after, Power Fest is moving to the People’s Lot on Vermont and Manchester with a full musical line up and a ferris wheel.

Comic Book Artist Goes from Superheroes to Civil Rights

People familiar with the 2013 graphic novel “March” and its two sequels already know that Lewis’ illustrated history of his role in the civil rights movement became a sensation. Despite critics who thought a “comic book” was too pulpy for an elder statesman’s story, it triumphed on the New York Times best-seller list. The third installation went on to win the National Book Award, a first for a graphic novel.
