Several Los Angeles high school students from the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Youth Theology Institute were recently treated to a unique religious experience at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Baldwin Hills. LMU sponsors the five-day Youth Theology Institute, which focuses on leadership and theology. The institute allows youth to explore their leadership potential and spirituality by using the resources of Roman Catholicism and other religious traditions. As part of the institute, the students visited St. Bernadette. The thriving Baldwin Hills’ church known as St. Bernadette Parish is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Established in 1947, the church has ministered to South L.A. African American families for decades. In acknowledgement of reaching this milestone, Deacon Jim Carper, the Parish Life Director, and the congregation will host quarterly events throughout the year. Originally, St. Bernadette held Mass in the clubhouse of the Sunset Fields Golf Course. In 1948, the church relocated to 3701 Stocker St. The current edifice at 3825 Don Felipe Drive was completed in 1960. Wal-Mart in Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza will be closing on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016. The super chain store announced to it’s workers the morning of Jan. 15 that they will be closing 48 hours before it’s closure. Store officials stated they will help employees find further employment, if possible.
StarQuest Auditions are set to kickoff at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza on the Macy’s Bridge Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10am-6pm and Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1pm-5pm. The local contest turns four this year and continues to be a hub of talent for the South L.A. area. Finalists who make it past the initial auditions go on to perform on the TOS StarQuest Stage and perform for TOS Nation, which stands now over 350,000 people.
