The thriving Baldwin Hills’ church known as St. Bernadette Parish is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Established in 1947, the church has ministered to South L.A. African American families for decades. In acknowledgement of reaching this milestone, Deacon Jim Carper, the Parish Life Director, and the congregation will host quarterly events throughout the year. Originally, St. Bernadette held Mass in the clubhouse of the Sunset Fields Golf Course. In 1948, the church relocated to 3701 Stocker St. The current edifice at 3825 Don Felipe Drive was completed in 1960.
