Black Hollywood came out to salute Pastor Della Reese on the 30th Anniversary of Understanding Principles for Better Living Church.
The gala event, held September 21, featured tributes, entertainment and dinner to the ministry of Dr. Della, who also known for her trailblazing acting and musical talents.
“We go back a long way and there’s no higher spirit today than Della Reese,” said actor Lou Gossett who joined actress Marla Gibbs in sharing remarks during the program.
Actor Obba Babatunde noted, “I’m thrilled to celebrate legendary, iconic Della Reese. She has been a standard-bearer in the entertainment industry as well as a great human being.”
Explaining the reason she has remained in the ministry, Pastor Della said, “God told me to [stay in the ministry for so long]. I really made a circle. I started as child singing gospel, and then I made this curve [into the entertainment industry].
“After I made wonderful success, it wasn’t how I thought it would make me feel. I found myself sneaking back, singing a gospel song or singing with a gospel group until I realized that this was what I was supposed to be doing.”
Her husband, Franklin Lett, observed, “Della’s given 30 years of dedication, not only to God, but to the sharing of His word. A lot of lives have changed. I’ve been here all 30 years, so I’ve seen the results of what she has accomplished.”
“Rev. Della is so awesome. She explained the Word to me and literally, I was touched by an angel,” revealed Ursula Marie Porcat, an UP Church member for 10 years.
