Pastor James A. Brooks will mark 64 years of outstanding Christian and community service at St. John Missionary Baptist Church. In honor of his dedicated ministry, the congregation has invited the greater Los Angeles community to attend an appreciation service on Sunday, November 2, at 3:30 p.m.
The theme is ‘Our Pastor, a Faithful Godly Leader Worth Following’ based on Hebrews 13:7. Pastor E. C. Bowdry of New Brighter Day Baptist Church will deliver the sermon.
Guests include Pastor Ricardo Bartlett and Greater New Zion Baptist Church, Pastor Milton Marshall and Union Baptist Church and Pastor W. J. Glenn and Mount Nebo Baptist Church.
Earlier this year, the Sentinel interviewed Pastor Brooks at his 102nd birthday party. Reflecting on his long ministry, he said, “I have enjoyed it. I was a young man when I came here and this church has meant so much to my family and me. All of my children grew up here and were educated in this church.”
His 19-year-old granddaughter, Kyla Brooks, noted, “My grandfather is an amazing person. Everybody in my family is proud of him and his legacy.”
A native of Natchez, MS, Pastor Brooks came to Los Angeles in 1946 and over the years, he has been active in several religious and community organizations as well as a staunch supporter of local businesses.
