In Times Like These Top of Form

This past week was a real challenge for me. My husband has a condominium on the outskirts of Chicago that we do not get back to check on often. However, due to some damage that it had sustained from a fire and a flood, on two different occasions in his building, it was time for us to go and assess the situation to see what needed to be done.

“BulletProof”

We always want to believe that tomorrow will be better than today and today will be better than yesterday. Right. We teach our scholars (that’s all of them) and our staff (all of them) this: “today is another great day to do good and to be successful.” It’s a saying I created and learned you can speak even to people you don’t know and they smile.

The Liberation Psychology of Nana Frantz Fanon: Struggle as Normative and Necessary

As the country and the world experiences and resists the rise and expansion of rightist forces and their attempts to limit and deny freedom and justice, the seminal works of Nana Frantz Fanon come into sharp focus. Especially relevant here is his treatment of the psychology of liberation as both normative and necessary in the context of oppression and his insightful analysis on overcoming what he defines as “the pathology of freedom.” I read this as the pathology of unfreedom or the pathology of oppression which is a disease imposed on freedom and therefore creating a diseased and disabled freedom,

Op Ed: Why Voting and Local Government Engagement Matters in 2024

On March 31, 1870, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Mr. Thomas Mundy Petersen, the son of freed slaves, made history by casting the first vote by an African American in a United States election. It was just over a month after the 15th Amendment was ratified, prohibiting the federal government and the states from denying anyone the right to vote “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

Beyond Unity, An Urgent Call Towards Equitable Belonging

While condolences and prayers of comfort for recovery are much needed considering the callous events in Butler, PA, it should not be lost to us that vile verbal vitriol in any volatile political environment WILL make conditions conducive for physical violence.

Same Mercy Shown to Trump Should Be Extended to School Children

In the aftermath of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, we hear of divine intervention; that God’s mercy saved him from a deadly bullet that whizzed by within less than an inch of his head. Our school children haven’t been so lucky.

Are You Prime?

I recently read a book that talked a lot about the importance of being prime.  When I think of the word prime, the first thing that comes to my mind is Amazon Prime and how as a member you get free shipping and even access to Prime cable television. I also think about the athlete and coach Deion Sanders because his nickname is Prime Time.  What both have in common is they are consider among the best in their field.

Patrice Lumumba Answering the Invitation of History: Leadership For Liberation and a Mission of Martyrdom

The real and most meaningful measure of a man and woman is not their capacity to accommodate, adjust to evil, injustice and unfreedom, and find a comfortable place in oppression; rather it is to find themselves in the ranks of resistance regardless of how overwhelming the odds and the balance of forces against them. And Nana Patrice Lumumba, in this his 99th birth year, July 2, 1925, stands firmly and rightly in the ranks of these honored self-giving and self-sacrificing soldiers and servants of our people.

President Biden, Talk to the Voters

President Joe Biden missed a great opportunity on June 27.  Two days after the disastrous debacle also known as a debate, tens of thousands of people thronged to Washington DC Mass Poor People’s and Low Wage Workers Assembly and Moral March on Washington and to the Polls.

A Good Idea Can Be Destroyed Behind a Bad Process

The 2023 motion authored by Supervisor Mitchell and co-authored by Supervisor Lindsey Horvath offered a key theme: the need for a thoughtful and data-informed approach to improving the county’s governance structure.

Don’t Give Up Now. The Best is Yet to Come!

Daniel was reading over some books and records written about time. Jeremiah had been writing words that addressed some specific times of things which were to come to pass. The people had been sinning—a lot—Jeremiah’s writings was talking about devastating (desolations) circumstances would be accomplished on Jerusalem in 70 years. Daniel was a praying prophet. These devastating circumstances were to take place from 479 to 409 B.C. By reading the books, Daniel understood being the number of the years that Jehovah “would accomplish in the desolations of Jerusalem.” (Daniel 9:2) Daniel further understood, based on the tenure of Cyrus, there

Presidential Debate Debacle? Not So Fast!!!

If you’re a supporter of former President Donald Trump, after last Thursday’s presidential debate, you’re probably elated. If you’re a supporter of President Joe Biden, there is a great deal of disappointment and sadness. Many Democrats entered into full panic mode, with some even calling for President Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, to be replaced. As time passed, Democratic leaders like former President Barack Obama, Governor Gavin Newsom, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries rallied to the President’s aid. Vice President Kamala Harris gave a full-throated defense of her partner in the executive branch of government. On the other

Independence Day is Still Dependent Upon Us Becoming United

The fourth of July is the day we celebrate the United States of America’s independence and establishing it as a country free from tyranny and foreign rule.  The original 13 colonies would now be free from British control.   Ironically, our country may be free from foreign rule, but are we influenced by powers that cause an internal rift creating a great divide. We as a country are yet to be truly a united country. Even though we are no longer ruled by a foreign power, if we are not careful, America could be headed towards external influences that could be
