Our Authors Study Club, Inc. of Los Angeles (OASC) and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter, are seeking young people to participate in the 2022 Annual Oratorical Contest.
The competition takes place on Saturday, March 26, at 10:00 a.m. The deadline to enter has been extended to Wednesday, February 23, and is open to youth in grades 9 through 12 in the Southern California area. Applications are accepted online at [email protected].
The theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black health and wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine and other ways of knowing (e.g., birth workers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, and more.) throughout the African Diaspora.
In addition, the 2022 theme considers activities, rituals, and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well. For example, Black people employed self-determination, mutual aid, and social support initiatives to foster good health and wellness, building hospitals and medical and nursing schools, including Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, Provident Hospital, and Training School Morehouse School of Medicine and community clinics.
