February 3: Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion, 1831

In August 1831, Nathaniel “Nat” Turner began a slave rebellion, striking fear into white Southerners. As a child, Turner inherited a strong hatred of slavery, and felt he was led by God to lead his people out of it. This rebellion killed approximately 60 men, women, and children.
