For years, the Los Angeles Sentinel has opened its doors to young students looking for a summer internship. This summer at the nationally recognized newspaper, there were four new interns who decided to join the ranks and spend their summer with the editorial department at the Sentinel; their names are: Amanda Scurlock, Ngozi Taylor, Jordan Cooper, and Paris Young. These interns engaged themselves within the inner-workings of the Sentinel and really got to understand how a newspaper is operated.

Scurlock worked in the Editorial Department focusing on Sports. She wrote articles for the sports section, took photos, and created videos for Taste of Soul vendor profiles. Notably, Scurlock recently graduated from USC with a masters of science in Journalism. She attended Crenshaw High School and went on to attend UC Berkeley and studied English. Her interest in journalism began when she started writing for Onyx Express, a campus magazine that focuses on African-American issues. After graduating from Berkeley, she wrote articles for the collegiate newspaper at Los Angeles City College (LACC). American issues. After graduating, she wrote articles for the Collegian Newspaper at LACC. In 2014, Scurlock began attending USC where she learned about photography, documentary filmmaking and broadcast news. Her advice for college bound students is to “fight for your dreams and be willing to step outside your comfort zone, face your fears and work tirelessly for your dreams. The world needs your good ideas.” Scurlock is currently a contributing writer on staff in the Editorial Department.

Cooper worked within the Editorial and Executive Departments. She is a second year student at Los Angeles Southwest College. Cooper plans to transfer to Loyola Marymount next fall where she intends to major in sociology and enter a career as a social worker. Also, due to her history as a dancer for the past 14 years, she plans to either double-major or minor in the performing arts. Her advice to the scholars who are still in high school or in college is “to first reach high and never lower your standards or hold back on your aspirations. Also, if you plan to major in journalism, or even just want some professional experience, I would definitely suggest trying the Sentinel. As a Sentinel Intern I can definitely say that I have gained far more experience than I planned to.” Cooper is currently working within the Executive Department.

Young currently attends El Camino College where she studies journalism and communication. She worked within the Editorial Department writing stories and assisting with proofing articles. The advice that she gives to the youth is, “Your passions will keep you determined so remember to always do what makes you happy.” As evidenced from Paris’s very own words, determination is the key to success.

“I have learned from all of my peers this summer that, no matter what walk of life that you hail from, dedicate yourself to what you are passionate about,” said Taylor. “Only in immersing yourself in a positive environment, can you truly be happy… which, in the end, must be the true meaning of success.”

We thank all our interns for their hard work and dedication.
