CRENSHAW FINALLY VICTORIOUS, IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE
Friday night the Cougars returned to what looked like their form of last season, handing Banning a 46-0 loss. Crenshaw appeared to be not as predictable as they have been in the last two games, which looked identical to the State Championship game, with the Cougars jumping out to an early lead only to have offensive and defensive breakdowns in the second half causing them to be defeated.
Crenshaw showed change by using All City quarterbacks Marquis Thompson as a wide receiver and a safety, and using backup quarterback Jerry McConico as the starter. In the last two games using this strategy McConico is 19 of 38 for 300 yards. Against Banning, McConico was 5 of 10 for 121 yards with no interceptions and 2 touchdowns. Crenshaw’s All City running back D’Anthony Thomas had six carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars were also playing without the services of Qujuan Floyd and Dayvon Allen, who play major roles on the Crenshaw football team.
On defense, Crenshaw is spearheaded by the play of defensive linemen James Brock, and Yohance Salimu, and linebacker Joseph Pullard. With Thompson able to focus on playing safety, the Cougars were able to use Thomas sparingly on defense. This appeared to establish a better pace for the Cougars, being able to rest athletes that are usually exhausted by the second half. The score was 28-0 at half time and many of the starters were not used much in the second half.
The Banning Pilots looked far from the great Banning teams of old. They were stagnant on offense and completely unable to stop Crenshaw’s offensive attack. Banning will need to get their act together before league play starts because Carson , Narbonne and San Pedro are already playing outstanding football. All three teams lost this week, but the losses were to quality football programs (Rancho Santa margarita, Long Beach Poly and Palos Verdes Estates). This week Crenshaw will host J.W. North of Riverside and Banning will face San Fernando
Crenshaw was also victorious at the District office this week in a decision by the commissioner to allow transfer student Shaquille Shelton to attend and play for the Cougars. Shelton expected to be a standout at Taft High School as a running back/defensive back, is now at Crenshaw and will allow the Cougars to have another dimension taking some the attention off of Thomas. As the season progresses we will see if this transfer pays dividends by the conclusion of conference play.
DOMINGUEZ RUNS OVER COMPTON
The Dons of Dominguez are officially the Kings of Compton after defeating the Compton Tarbabes 14-0. Dons running back Devonte Carter rushed 21 times for 140 yards and one 18-yard touchdown.
This game would be as close as the score sounds. Both teams run a Double Wing T offense, and both teams played exceptional defense. Dominguez would score midway through the second quarter, with Carter running behind a wall of Don blockers. Dominguez would score again on a 6-yard pass from Chris Brown to Daquan Richardson to seal the victory with 9:07 left in the fourth. The Tarbabes were never able to get all league running back Roger Jones free. Jones was smothered by a host of Don tacklers whenever he touched the ball and Compton had no answer for the Don attack. Compton will host Dorsey this week and Dominguez will host Long Beach Jordan.
