Our Authors Study Club and Sigma Gamma Rho, Sigma Sigma Chapter sponsor the citywide event for African American Heritage Month
High school students throughout greater Los Angeles are invited to participate in the 2023 Annual Youth Oratorical Contest sponsored by Our Authors Study Club and Sigma Gamma Rho, Sigma Sigma Chapter.
The event offers coaching, mentoring, awards and cash prizes.
The contest is open to 9th through 12th grade students. Participants are asked to write a speech based on the theme, “Black Resistance.” The speech must be at least four minutes long, but not exceed eight minutes long.
Applications are available online at oratoricalcontest.com. The deadline to submit entries is February 28.
According to OASC President Lura Ball, “The purpose of the program is to help the students gain a deeper understanding of the theme and promote the art of speaking. In addition, their research and presentations share Black History and often provide new knowledge, understanding, and thoughts on the subjects.
“Past participants have grown in their leadership ability and capacity to think clearly and intelligently. Students that compete over multiple years increase their confidence, agility, persuasion, and audience impact during their oration,” she added.
