July 17: Pioneering jazz artist pioneer John Coltrane passed away at the age of 40 in Huntington, NY, 1967
John Coltrane was a saxophonist and composer, working with famed musicians/bandleaders Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis during the 1940s and 1950s. Coltrane turned the jazz world on its head with technically, innovative playing skills, which can be heard on “Giant Steps,” “My Favorite Things” and “A Love Supreme,” among others.
