Now, this is a sign of divine alignment. The Oscars and Bowers & Sons Cleaners, the subject of the Oscar-nominated short documentary “A Concerto is a Conversation,” located at 2509 South Central Avenue in Los Angeles, are both celebrating their 93rd year.
“A Concerto is a Conversation” creative team held a press event, last week, and an in conversation with the virtuoso jazz pianist and film composer Kris Bowers, who tracks his family’s lineage through his 91-year-old grandfather Horace from Jim Crow Florida to the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
A Breakwater Studios production, the film is co-directed by Kris Bowers and Breakwater Founder & CEO Ben Proudfoot. Ava DuVernay executive produced the documentary, which premiered last November on The New York Times Op-Docs and made its festival debut at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival in January of this year.
The film is now playing at over 120 movie theaters nationwide as part of the 2021 Oscar® Nominated Short Films theatrical release.
This event celebrated the film’s nomination for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards. This is the first nomination for Ben Proudfoot and a first directing nomination for Kris Bowers, who composed the music for 2019’s Best Picture winner, “Green Book.” The awards ceremony will be televised live on ABC at 5:30 pm PT on April 25 (Academy voting takes place from April 15 to 20).

Last week, the facade of the cleaners was transformed back to the late 1940s when Horace Bowers first opened its doors.
Guests had a photo opportunity in front of the cleaners alongside classic cars and a curbside pianist. Renowned Angelino muralist Robert Vargas painted a mural of Horace Bowers. live. Co-directors Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers were on site to greet the press, neighbors, and fans of the film. Guests were encouraged to bring their best outfit to be dry cleaned for the Academy Awards®.
Naturally, the film’s subject, Horace Bowers, made a grand entrance in a 1940 Cadillac.
