Musicians In Action will sponsor its annual 2019 Drum Clinic on Saturday, April 27, from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., at The Living Room on the Faithful Central Bible Church campus, 400 W. Florence Ave., in Inglewood.
Each year, MIA offers the Drum Clinic to assist youth and young adults interested in playing drums. The clinic’s breakout sessions entails several topics as well as skill and technique development to enhancing the natural gift.
Renowned faith and secular drummers often participate, including percussionist Sheila E, who was last year’s special guest.
“The clinicians provide hands-on teaching methods, visual demonstration, mentorships and inspiration that leaves a lasting impression on the young attendees. Many of the young people that attend the clinic learn self-expression through the art of percussions. There is a master-class offered for young people with skill and experience,” said Gerald and Jacque Malone, MIA CEO/executive directors,.
Also at the clinic, MIA pays tribute to a drummer whose career is a pathway for future drummers to follow. In 2018, the clinic paid tribute to the late Leon (Ndugu) Chancler, a drummer whose crisp grooves and pinpoint fireworks of syncopation were heard on hundreds of albums — including Michael Jackson’s song “Billie Jean.”
The 2019 Drum Clinic will pay special tribute to the late Victor McElhaney, the promising 21-years-old musician and percussion student at the USC Thornton School of Music, who was recently killed in a liquor store robbery a few weeks ago near the campus.
Parents, pastors, churches, music educators are invited to enroll their youth and young adults in the 2019 Drum Clinic. The registration is $15, which covers for supplies and lunch.
Gerald and Jacque Malone, MIA CEO/executive directors, said, “Over the years, no young person has been turned away. Drum Clinic Scholarships are available on a first come basis for young people that are in need,” noted the Malones.
Von Parchman, Drum Clinic chairperson, added that much of the expense for the equipment is offset by a variety of drum manufactures and drum merchandise companies.
