U.S. Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-San Pedro) today introduced legislation to improve security at our nation’s airports, railways, and mass transit systems. The Strengthening Local Transportation Security Capabilities Act would reduce emergency response times by putting more federal law enforcement officers and resources near high-risk surface transportation assets, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The bill would also provide new terrorism-focused training, and improve cooperation between federal, State, and local law enforcement partners by establishing a framework for unified operation centers.
“Commuter rail, buses and airports are well-known targets for terrorists,” said Rep. Barragán. “We must not let our guard down and work to ensure that our law enforcement officers are equipped to meet our security challenges. This bill would provide necessary resources and tools to help keep our transit systems safe and secure.”
