Eight powerful preachers headline the 2017 Prayer Bowl set for Jan. 2, at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 4269 S. Figueroa St., in Los Angeles.
Pastor Melvin V. Wade, Sr., has hosted the annual event, which began more than 60 years ago under Mount Moriah founder Dr. Earl A. Pleasant, the last 41 years. Joining as co-host is the Rev. Xavier L. Thompson, pastor of Southern St. Paul Church and president of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California.
Sermons will be delivered each hour starting at 9 a.m. The preachers (in order of appearance) are Bishop Miquail Broadous, pastor of the Grace Temple Baptist Church in Los Angeles; the Rev. Ticey Brown, pastor of Mount Tabor Baptist Church in Los Angeles; the Rev. Wayne Chaney, Jr., pastor of Antioch Church of Long Beach; Pastor Wade, the Rev. Michael J. T. Fisher, pastor of Greater Zion Church Family in Compton; the Rev. H.B. Charles, pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL; the Rev. Dr. Jamal H. Bryant of Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, MD; and Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr., of Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church on Atlanta, GA.
Outlining why people should start the New Year with prayer, Wade said, “The Bible says ‘seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,’ so I would think we as a people would want to attend because of the fact that God ought to be first anyway, God always has a rich word for His people and there is a need for the church to be in prayer for our community.”
Aiming for additional spiritual support, Wade added, “We’re looking for everybody to be in prayer about this service that God will really get the glory. What God does, He always does for two reasons – one, His glory and two, our good.”
