‘How Sweet the Sound’ Reveals L.A.’s Role in Gospel Music History

A new exhibit reveals Black L.A.’s key role in the evolution of gospel music. “How Sweet the Sound: Gospel Music in Los Angeles” uses vintage photographs, video recordings and other memorabilia to tell how African American artists and churches created a global musical phenomenon. The multi-media presentation is at the California African American Museum in Exposition Park until August 26. The historical display charts the Black religious experience in Los Angeles from 1872 to the early 1970s. Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Los Angeles will conclude the “42nd Year Appreciation and Recognition Celebration of Pastor Melvin V. and Lady Jacquie Wade, Sr.,” on Sunday, April 30, during the 9:15 a.m. and 4 p.m. services. The Rev. Dr. Solomon L. Drake will retire from the pastoral ministry in June after decades of preaching, teaching and leading hundreds to Christ. As the spiritual leader of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Drake touched thousands during long career of his Christian and community service. Life Celebration Slated for Mrs. Mary Frazier Wade

 Mrs. Mary Frazier Wade, the mother of the Rev. Dr. Melvin V. Wade, Sr., pastor of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Los Angeles, passed away on April 11 following a brief illness. Mrs. Wade, who was 98-years-old, was the wife of the late Dr. James Commodore Wade, Sr., pastor of the historic Salem Baptist Church of Omaha, Nebraska. Two celebration of life services are planned.
