For more than 20 years, the legendary hardest working woman in gospel music has been making stellar gospel music and her newest collection titled “How I Got Over,” is a extension of this legacy of great music. After a three-year hiatus, Winans returns with “How I Got Over” a collection of new songs and old favorites that will please the listeners from start to finish.

Winans begins the praise party with the stellar title track, which will have the listener grooving for the lord. The song is a tribute to her mother. The song mixes the traditional sound of the song with a rocking new scatting version that is performed by her nephew Tim Bowman Jr. This song will take the listener to church.

Winans and Tye Tribbett team up the wonderful praise song “Heyyy.” The song is about praising God in your dance. In the middle of the song Winans and Tribbett beak the song down in the style that is reminiscent of R. Kelly’s “Steppin’ In the Name of Love” song. They ask the question “Does anybody feel like dancin’/does anybody feel like groovin’/does anybody feel like praisin’God,” the answer of this listener is yes.

Winans adds her classic song “Suddenly” originally from her self titled CD, to this collection. This song was originally written by her eldest son Mario Winans. The song is reflecting on her journey to accepting Christ. The song is magnificent. Her voice soars up to the heavens as she sings with conviction.

Winans also dedicates a song to her late mother titled “My Peace.” In the song, she tearfully sings about what she imagines what her mother was saying as she left the earth. The song will bring a tear to every listener’s eyes. This song is absolutely beautiful.

Winans also adds another classic recording originally from her “Live In Detroit” CD, titled “No Not One.” The song is simply a great recording. Winans shines her brightest on this song. The arrangement is traditional yet Winans adds her own flavor to it.

This collection is fantastic. If you love gospel music, you are guaranteed to love this collection.
