Watts Area Ministers (WAM) recently hosted a faith and community leaders breakfast meeting featuring Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The breakfast gathering was hosted by Pastor Charles Harris at his Village Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1521 East 111th Street in Watts.

WAM is actively involved in serving and solving problems for residents in the Watts community. The meeting included over 30 Watts-area churches and community organizations.  During the discussion, Bass updated attendees about her agenda for the city as well as her efforts and programs to assist residents in the Watts community.

The issues highlighted included mental health assistance, the need for additional section 8 assistance for residents seeking housing, plans to reduce homelessness in the Watts community, creating partnerships with banks and faith organizations to create additional affordable and homeless housing in the community, and the importance of supporting youth programs for young people in Watts.

Pastor K.W. Tulloss, president of the Baptist Ministers Conference and one of the event organizers, said, “It was important for leaders in the Watts community to stay connected with Mayor Bass and help her advance her agenda for the City of Los Angeles.”

Pastor Robert Taylor, president of WAM, said that he “thought the meeting with the mayor was very informative and looks forward to continuing to work with Mayor Bass on solving some of the area’s most pressing problems.”

Offering similar comments, Pastor Douglas Nelson of True L.A. Church and True L.A. and executive secretary of the Western Baptist State Convention of California, added, “It was a great informative meeting and it was wonderful that the mayor would engage the pastors of Watts.  And what’s to come appears to be even more exciting!”
