Ward African Methodist Episcopal Church will celebrate 115 years of ministry in South Los Angeles several events highlighting the anniversary theme, “Called out – A Chosen Church To Be Holy” based on I Peter 2:9- 10.

“Ward is rededicating itself to continue trailblazing, speaking out, welcoming all who need a place of solace, and inaugurating life-changing, family-oriented ministry,” said Pastor John E. Cager III. “Everyone whose life has been and is being touched by Ward AME Church is urged to show up for this 115th anniversary celebration.”

Upcoming is a riverboat cruise departing from Long Beach on Sunday, August 13, at 3 p.m. As lunch is served, diners will enjoy keyboardist and vocalists Kenny and Theresa Ford, comedienne Kathy Westfield, the soulful Ward Revelators and the debuting Harmonettes. The Rev. Nathaniel W. Martin will emcee.

On Saturday, August 19, at 8 a.m., members will commemorate the church’s 1951 move to its current location with the “Ward Is Still On The Way March.” It begins at Walker Temple AME Church, 2525 Trinity St., and moves west the Ward edifice at 1177 W. 25th St. The public and community stakeholders are invited to participate.

“Prayer intercessors will assemble at 8 a.m. to pray and wait until the March participants arrive,” said Cager. “All will enter at 9 a.m. for altar prayer of thanksgiving for those on whose shoulders we stand, for God’s direction to each of the faith communities, and in preparation for the vision of Ward’s work in the future.” Both Walker Temple and First Church of the Nazarene have been invited to recreate that sojourn which will include walkers, bikers, vintage automobiles, and a vintage bus.

On Sunday, August 20, at 10 a.m., Pastor Charles Lee Johnson of Corona Community AME Church will preach. At 3 p.m., a concert is planned featuring the House of Prayer, First AME Church – Pasadena, First AME – Los Angeles and Ward’s Angels Without Wings and Liturgical Dance Ministry.
