2nd Annual ‘AAFCA TV Honors’ Highlights Frontline Heroes Risking Their Lives in the Battle Against COVID-19

This virtual celebration was made possible through the sponsorship of Morgan Stanley. The award categories included: TV Icon, Inclusion Award, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best TV Movie, Breakout Performers, Best YA, Best Animated, Best Documentary, and Best Short film. A range of front-line essential workers joined Celebrities like John Legend, Rashida Jones, and William Jackson Harper to hand out 11 awards and two honorary awards on Saturday. A portion of the proceeds from the event has gone to the National Association of Black Journalists’ COVID-19 Relief fund.

The theme for the 2019 Gala is A Journey to the Pride Lands, based on the upcoming Walt Disney feature, “THE LION KING.” Emmy-winning actress and comedienne Tiffany Haddish will serve as the Gala’s master of ceremonies. TV personality and best-selling author Star Jones returns as the Gala’s celebrity auctioneer for the third year. Presenters include Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis and author Shaka Senghor. 

AAFCA and ABA Film Society present Inaugural Learning Lab “Celebrating Black Excellence in Cinema” with Netflix’s Tendo Nagenda and Outler Society’s Alana Mayo

From the global blockbuster Black Panther and the lyrical indie If Beale Street Could Talk to the hilariously poignant comedy sensations Insecure and Atlanta and beyond, #BlackExcellence in Hollywood is on full blast. Rightfully, the movement has put an additional spotlight on Black creative executives, many of whom have long worked in the trenches to create a pipeline of opportunity for traditionally underrepresented groups. In turn, that has ignited the spark that many tag as a “Black Hollywood Renaissance.”

Vic Bulluck Directs Viola Davis and Julius Tennon Produced Play ‘Paradise’

Bulluck’s new passion project is his latest play titled “Paradise.” Originally written by Laura Censebella, the play shares the journey between a gifted Yemeni-American and biology teacher’s unlikely relationship. The pair becomes tangled in conflict, religious differences, and test the boundaries of mentorship. Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s production company JuVee Productions teamed with American Oasis to bring the play to life.

2019 Academy Award Nominations:

The Favourite and Roma tied for the most Oscar nominations with 10 each, thereby besting Golden Globe Best Picture-winners Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody which only landed 5 apiece. Still, the most surprising news is the love lavished by the Academy on Spike Lee, who was nominated for Best Director for the first time in his 40-year career.
