Murray Bids Farewell to USC After 17 Years of Service

Cheers, applause, fond memories and best wishes were constantly repeated during the celebration for the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray, who retired from the University of Southern California after 17 years. Scores of people filled the University Club patio on October 20 for a reception saluting Murray’s tenure as an instructor, lecturer, and namesake of the USC Cecil L. Murray Center for Community Engagement.  The array of genders, ethnicities and professions on hand attested to Murray’s wide-ranging impact. Senior linebacker Shane Lee transferred to USC with the hope to help change the culture of their football team and bring them back into the national spotlight. Now, the Trojans are ranked seventh in the AP Top 25 College Football Poll with a 3-0 overall record.

WEDC’s Casa de Rosas Opens Doors for Veterans Again and Again

Casa de Rosas, the expansive, new housing community led by Ward Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), held its third open house for Los Angeles veterans seeking long-term affordable housing on Thursday, July 21 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Located at 2600 Hoover Street, the 36-unit property is tucked between the Adams-Normandie and Historic South Central neighborhoods, just down the street from USC and Exposition Park.

Former USC Volleyball Player Competes in Athletes Unlimited

Since its inception in March 2020, Athletes Unlimited (AU) has provided female athletes the option to extend their pro careers in the United States through their innovative leagues. Former USC opposite Nikia Withers recently completed her first season with the AU Volleyball league.  

Rest in Peace – Linda Lanier

The community lost another angel with the passing of Linda Lanier, who left this world for eternal rest with the Heavenly Father on April 15. She was 70 years old.

Local Prep Stars Become NFL First-Round Draft Picks

Among the 32 first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, five were natives of Southern California. Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, USC wide receiver Drake London, Washington corner Trent McDuffie, Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave, and Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd had their dreams come true on Thursday.
