Black Lines Matter: The Fight Over Redistricting Lines in Los Angeles

: Council Districts (CDs) 8, 9 and 10 saw minimal changes in the final draft map to be submitted to the Los Angeles City Council by the Redistricting Commission. The adopted draft map, which passed by a 15-6 vote, featured adjustments to the three CDs with the city’s highest numbers of voting age African Americans. Most notably, Exposition Park is now located in CD 8.

Kaiser Invests Over $4Million to Combat Homelessness in SoCal

Kaiser Permanente officials are aiming to become a part of the homeless solution in Southern California with a $4.3 million grant to Los Angeles and San Diego for more affordable and secure homes. Those counties, officials said, have the highest rates of homeless with the least affordable housing. The grant will help to create and preserve 75 affordable and/or permanent supportive housing units in the two areas.

Southland’s Third Summer Heat Wave Begins

The heat wave results from high pressure aloft spreading into Southern California, combined with a weakening in the onshore flow, said National Weather Service meteorologist Curt Kaplan. Temperatures will begin declining Monday.

Southland Heat Wave Enters Day 2

High temperatures of 95 to 102 degrees are expected across most of the Los Angeles County valleys today through Sunday, with the warmest expected today and Saturday across the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, according to a National Weather Service statement. Minimum temperatures will be in the mid 60s to lower 70s.

City Attorney Feuer Challenges FAA Changes to Flight Pattern Over Mid-City/Central LA in Federal Court of Appeals

City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office, on behalf of the City, is suing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S. Court of Appeals, challenging the FAA’s recent changes to procedures that affect incoming aircraft flying over mid-City and central Los Angeles on their way to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).  The FAA’s changes allegedly were done without proper environmental review or public input and represent the latest example of FAA’s persistent failure to address noise and other negative impacts from aircraft overflights in those areas. 

Councilwoman Nury Martinez and LAPD Mission Division Kick Off Volunteer Community Patrol Program

Councilwoman Nury Martinez and LAPD Mission Division officially kicked off the Volunteer Community Patrol (VCP) program within the Mission Division patrol area. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of residential and motor vehicle burglaries with help from civilian volunteers, who support LAPD’s mission of increasing public safety. This is the second program in the Councilwoman’s District since the West Valley Division VCP was launched last year.

The Soweto Gospel Choir is a Grammy Award-winning group that has collaborated with some of the biggest names in music — including U2, John Legend, Peter Gabriel, and Diana Ross — and scored an Academy Award nomination for its work on the soundtrack to Pixar’s WALL-E. The 43-member choir, drawn from churches in and around Soweto, inspires audiences, sharing the joy of faith.
