California Connect held a free health and resource fair for the community at the Earvin “Magic” Johnson Recreation Area on Thursday, Feb. 1. The event had 43 vendors including representatives for L.A. County Supervisor Holly Mitchell and Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson offices.
December 1, World Aids Day, was also a day of celebration because a new super weapon was unveiled. “The Love Bus is a preventive mobile health unit. It is meant to meet people where they are, but also where they want to be,” shared Dazon Dixon Diallo, who recognized a growing need in the African American community for health care services in 1989.

Sen. Drs. James Hildreth and Ebony Hilton, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-Missouri), and Olympic record-setter Allyson Felix also will receive National Leadership Awards from the NNPA, the trade association of more than 230 African American-owned newspapers and media companies.

The NAACP’s mission is that everyone receives the facts they need to make the best decisions for their families and communities while the fight against the pandemic goes forward, said NAACP president Derrick Johnson. African Americans surveyed have expressed ongoing concerns about the vaccines, the rise of COVID-19 variants, public adherence to guidelines, jobs availability, safely returning to work and other factors affecting their daily lives. The key learnings from this exclusive polling will serve to fill in the information gaps, and further strengthen our communities as they build back given the expressed need for reliable updates on the factors impacting their daily lives over the coming year.

The goal for L.A. Connected is to Magnetize the resources to the communities that need them the most. The city plans for this platform to be an educational tool to empower families to receive the help they need. It is a network that includes various service providers through Los Angeles City WorkSource and FamilySource that will help Angelenos apply to the following: unemployment insurance, file their taxes, apply for as much as $8,000 in tax credits, and access federal stimulus checks, known as Economic Impact Payments, which total up to $1,200 per adult and $500 per child.
“People are stressed and worried, not only about caring for themselves but protecting and caring for someone in the home or someone long distance,” Choula stated.
“It’s very important that there is increased conversation with nursing facilities through virtual visitation and phone calls, which is what AARP is advocating.”
Public education has failed Black students. Tragically, by virtually any measure, they are behind all other groups, including immigrant Latino students who have been in the U.S. for only three years. At the federal, state and local levels there have been some programs that relate to African American students.
Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price, who represents the Ninth Council District of Los Angeles, kicked off his 2017 re-election campaign on Jan. 21 at Total Restoration Church alongside 400 supporters, including Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Attorney Mike Feuer, Council President Herb Wesson, California Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León, Councilmember Gilbert Cedillo, and numerous other officials from state and local government.
