Happy Birthday, Bishop Kirkland!

The L.A. Sentinel salutes the Right Rev. Theodore Larry Kirkland, Sr., retired bishop of the AME Church, who will celebrate his 75th birthday on April 8. Kirkland, who served 20 years as the presiding prelate of several AME Episcopal Districts, was previously the internationally known pastor of Brookins Community AME Church. He and Mrs. Mary L. Kirkland will be honored on Sunday, April 23, at 9 a.m., at Brookins-Kirkland Community AME Church (BKCAME), 3719 W. Slauson Ave., in Los Angeles.  The Rev. Dr. Mary S. First Ladies Health Day Marks Another Successful Event

Thirty churches in the Los Angeles area participated in the 6th Annual Walgreens-sponsored First Ladies Health Day on March 26. During the event, free health tests and medical screenings were provided for the entire family to address preventative illnesses, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics. Medical healthcare partners from Walgreens and more than 50 health organizations provided medical advice and counseling, as well as screenings for hypertension, HIV/AIDS, glucose, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer. Brookins-Kirkland AME Hosts First Ladies Health Event

Brookins-Kirkland Community AME Church will be among the L.A.-area ministries hosting the First Ladies Health Day on Sunday, March 26, in their edifice at 3719 W. Slauson Ave., in Los Angeles. The event, part of the First Ladies Health Initiative sponsored by Walgreen’s, promotes wellness in underserved communities by providing free health screenings and medical tests to detect preventable chronic illnesses — such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, hepatitis as well as various forms of cancer. Brookins-Kirkland AME Holds Dedication Service

Pastor Mary S. Minor and the members of Brookins-Kirkland Community AME Church (BKCAMEC) dedicated their new edifice on Dec. 4.   The joyous service featured a sermon Bishop Clement W. Fugh, presiding prelate of the 5th Episcopal District of the AME Church and retired Bishop Theodore Larry Kirkland, Sr., the first pastor of Brookins. Brookins –Kirkland Community AME Church plans to honor Pastor Mary S. Minor with an appreciation service on Sunday, October 16, at 3 p.m., in the sanctuary located at 1900 West 48th St., in Los Angeles.
