Dorothy Cobb Wheeler, Advocate for Others, Passes Away

A life dedicated to faith, family and community has ended for longtime Los Angeles resident Dorothy Cobb Wheeler, who passed away on May 27 at the age of 77. Inspired by her love for God and concern for all people, Dorothy devoted her first career to assisting residents as part of the LAPD Wilshire and Pacific Division’s Community Relations Office. Following her retirement, she attended law school at age 58 and became an attorney specializing in employment discrimination and working pro bono for faith-based and senior citizens groups. Local Churches Host Successful First Ladies Health Day

Thirty churches in the Los Angeles area participated in the Walgreens-sponsored First Ladies Health Day on April 8, where attendees received free health tests and medical screenings. During the event, free health tests and medical screenings were provided for the entire family to address preventative illnesses, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics. Medical healthcare partners from Walgreens and more than 50 health organizations provided medical advice and counseling, as well as screenings for hypertension, HIV/AIDS, glucose, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer.

AME Lenten Caravan Donates to Nonprofits

Eight AME churches recently united to present the Community Lenten Caravan (CLC), a series of services held in L.A. and Pasadena leading up to Resurrection Sunday. The goals were spiritual renewal for believers and raising funds to assist two local nonprofits. School on Wheels of Los Angeles and Alkebulan Cultural Center of Pasadena received all of the proceeds from the CLC services. Brookins-Kirkland AME Shows Appreciation to Pastor Minor

Brookins–Kirkland Community AME Church saluted the spiritual and executive leadership of Pastor Mary S. Minor during an appreciation service on October 15. The theme was “Our Pastor Shows Love Still Works” based on I Corinthians 13:1-13. The Steward and Trustee Boards sponsored the program. Pastor Darryl Walker and the members of New Philadelphia Church were the special guests. The pastor’s family also attended the service. In addition, Minor took time to recognize Trustee Willie Mayes (right) on his recent appointment as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Celebration of Life Service Set for Bennett

Los Angeles resident Joan V. Bennett passed away recently at her Harbor City residence. A longtime member of Brookins-Kirkland Community AME Church (BKCAME), Bennett served on the Senior Usher Board for more than 30 years. Her celebration of life service will be held Friday, May 19, at 1 p.m., at BKCAME, located at 3719 W. Slauson Ave., in Los Angeles. Pastor Mary S. Minor will officiate the memorial.
