L.A. Community Gathers for Sauls’ ‘Sending Forth’ Celebration

The Rev. Kelvin Sauls and the Rev. Judi Wortham Sauls gathered with family, friends and community members before launching the next phase of their ministry. The “Sending Forth” Community Celebration featured written commendations, verbal well wishes, delicious food and fancy dancing as people from all walks of life came out to salute the Sauls,’ who just completed a six-year tenure as the senior pastor and first lady of Holman United Methodist Church in the West Adams district of Los Angeles. Sauls Receives LACHC’s Spirit of Healing Award

The Los Angeles Christian Health Centers held its 2018 Spirit of Healing Gala on April 28, at the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The honorees included the Rev. Kelvin Sauls, pastor of Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles and widely recognized spiritual, community and social justice leader. The Spirit of Healing, which attracted close to 300 people, was an evening of inspiration, music and fundraising. This legacy event honors people from throughout Southern California who have significant positive impact on the care and advocacy for people who are marginalized or homeless. Johnson Headlines Holman UMC Prayer Breakfast

  Philanthropist and author Cookie Johnson shared excerpts from her memoir, “Believing in Magic,” at the prayer breakfast sponsored by Holman United Methodist Church on April 14. The theme was “Reset: Prayer, Power, Purpose.” The program featured food by G’s Catering, entertainment by Jubilant Voices, Greg Walker, KJLH Radio Free Voices and Lura Daniels-Ball and video presentations by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Ethiopian Airlines and the Black Cooperative Investment Fund. Faith Community Unites to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

  The historic flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey galvanized the Los Angeles faith community into action with multiple efforts underway to assist hundreds of thousands in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. Thanks to the generosity of Holman United Methodist Church and the South L.A. business community, the Delaware State University concert choir returned to their campus after being stranded three days in Los Angeles due to the blizzards on the east coast. Holman United Methodist Church will present its Annual Black College Summit to acquaint high school seniors and community college transfer students with Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs).
