On Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 95th birthday, nearly 60 years after he addressed 15,000 Angelenos in a rousing speech on race relations and human dignity at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1964, LA Works organized the MLK 2024 Volunteer Festival: Take Action to Support Our Beloved Community, at the same site.

Dorsey to Play King/Drew in High School Football Game at Memorial Coliseum
Dorsey will play King/Drew at the Coliseum on Friday, Oct. 27, in their final game of the regular season. Similar to the Roosevelt-Garfield East LA Classic game played last year at the Coliseum with a halftime performance by Will.I.Am and the Black Eyed Peas, this matchup deemed the South LA Classic will also have a special halftime performance headlined by Warren G and Xzibit.

On Wednesday, October 4, Los Angeles County hosted the 2nd Annual Tech Empowerment Day at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The private invitation-only event provided 6,000 middle and high school students from across the county with the opportunity to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and math.

Caleb Williams, the effervescent quarterback, ruled the day in the Trojan’s 38-27 win. Williams put on an electric performance, passing for 232 yards, completing 18 of 22 passes, nine carries for 35 yards, scoring three touchdowns on the ground, and throwing for one score.

USC Fires Football Coach Clay Helton USC football coach Clay Helton was fired Monday, with university Athletic Director Mike Bohn calling him “one of the finest human beings I have met in the industry” but saying he believes the team will have a greater chance of success this season under new leadership. The firing comes two days after the then-15th-ranked Trojans suffered a 42-28 loss to unranked Stanford in front of a stunned crowd at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Today, LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who serves as the President of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission, announced that the Coliseum’s Torch has been lit in honor of Rafer Johnson, the famed decathlete and actor who passed away today in his Sherman Oaks home.

FIGUEROA CORRIDOR BID OPPOSES RENAMING OF FIGUEROA TO KOBE BRYANT BOULEVARD
On August 25, 2020 Council Members Curren Price and Herb Wesson introduced a motion to rename a portion of Figueroa Street to Kobe Bryant Boulevard. Many believe that the renaming of Kobe Bryant Boulevard would be a fitting tribute to the legendary Laker along with his daughter Gianna Bryant and 7 others who were tragically killed in a helicopter crash in January of this year.
